A man was rushed to hospital in agony after being attacked by an angry drug addict with a bottle of ammonia.
Kraig Owens, 27, turned up at the flat in Lancelot Road and assaulted Jonathan Gent, Exeter Crown Court was told.
The victim, Jonathan Gent, was beaten up and left with ammonia burning into in his eye.
Owens was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to causing actual bodily harm.
The incident happened on June 26 last year.
Prosecutor Ms Mary McCarthy said Owens had previously been a relationship with a woman called Kerry Sercombe but she was now together with Mr Gent. Before the attack they had all got on well.
Owens had seen Ms Sercombe earlier in the day and was drunk and under the influence of Valium, said Ms McCarthy.
He had been using ammonia to make crack cocaine, the court was told.
Later that night he called Ms Sercombe and began shouting and screaming down the phone. It was not clear why he was so upset.
A friend of Ms Sercombe told him he could come to the flat and talk about it if he was prepared to calm down. About 20 minutes later Owens did show up. He was carrying a bottle of ammonia with the top off.
Ms McCarthy said Owens had the bottle ‘to use as a weapon to frighten’ rather than spray it in the face of anyone.
Mr Gent stepped in front of his girlfriend when Owens appeared at the door. During the confrontation Owens used the ammonia ‘recklessly’ and it splashed into Mr Gent’s eye. Some of it also went over Ms Sercombe but she managed to put her hands up in front of her face.
Mr Gent was punched and kicked. He fell down the stairs and was attacked with a piece of crockery, said the prosecutor.
Owens fled when police were called, leaving the bottle of ammonia behind. He was found by police two hours later passed out in a bus shelter.
Mr Gent was taken to hospital and his swollen eye washed out.
