Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.
(*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

1911 Remington Rand Serial Number Lookup

My long time friend found this gun in his father's possessions after he passed and gave it to me as a divorce present. I was thrilled! As you can imagine it cheered me up instantly Just one minor problem.
The gun does not have any serial numbers on it anywhere. I have looked it over very carefully and they have not been removed it was just never stamped with any.
It has the proof marks on the slide, frame and barrel and they appear to be the same size. It also has the FJA inspectors stamp on it. To my untrained eye, it appears to be stamped with a partial Ordnance department inspectors stamp(2nd to last pic).
I understand from some other posts that I read that there are some 'lunchbox' guns out there. If this is one of those why would it not have a serial number?
Should I shoot this gun, or should I put it up? If I do shoot it, should I worry about being pulled over with it it in the car and it not having a serial number? I saw a couple of posts stating that I could go to the ATF and get a serial number stamped on it, but if I do that wouldn't that lower the value? assuming it's worth anything.
What do I have here?
I would be grateful for any information and comments that you guys are willing to give.
Thanks everyone for taking a look.

Remington Rand serial number Im hoping someone can help me identify the markings on my 1911a1 remington rand. I just purchased it today and ive been wanting one for awhile now. Remington Rand M1911A1 serial number 984284 - Circa 1943 pistol with Type 2 slide markings. Close-up of Remington Rand Type 2 slide markings. Close-up of 'FJA' inspector's mark. FJA are the initials of Frank J. /old-town-canoe-serial-number-search.html. Atwood, inspector of ordnance. The 'P' proof mark is located near the magazine release. The receiver is a Remington-UMC which duplicated serial numbers with Colt. The Remington-UMC pistols were made in 1918 and 1919. The slide is a Remington Rand made between 1943 and 1945, and the markings you describe on the slide are not standard and were added at some later date.
