Ruger Old Model Blackhawk Serial Numbers 44 Mag
By looking at old manuals I collected the part numbers of the screws and discovered that the old model Single Six and old model Blackhawk used the same screws. Then I found an auction on ebay for a set of Ruger Old Army screws. We gets lots of questions about old Rugers. It should be fairly obvious to our readers by now that we are great fans of William B. Ruger and his fine firearms, so lots of folks must figure we're the guys to ask about that Old Model Super Blackhawk from the pawn shop or dad's old Bearcat. Ruger old model 357 Blackhawk Revolver 4 5/8 inch barrel in original unconverted condition with original Box, Warranty Card, Instruction Manuel and Parts Brochure. The gun appears unfired and in my opinion it is unfired since it left the factory.
Ruger does not produce firearms in serial number order. There are occasions when blocks of serial numbers have been manufactured out of sequence, sometimes years later. Also, within a model family the same serial number prefix may be used to produce a variety of different models, all in the same block of serial numbers. Location: NW Chicago Suburbs | New (to me) Blackhawk in .357. Mystery serial number. I just got this New Model Ruger Blackhawk in .357 with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. I absolutely love it. It is a blast to shoot and very pretty (to me.) It is blued and there is a fair amount of holster wear that helps give it an authentic feel. I don't like my guns to look brand new. I'm just crazy that way. While recording it in my database I noticed something curious about the serial number. I looked it up on the Serial number database pages that Ruger hosts. (Ruger New Model Blackhawk Serial Number History) They state that the old model was made until 1973 and the final year's serial numbers began with 31-41551. The new model serial numbers began in 1974 with 32-33639. Mine is a new model but its serial number is significantly earlier than the above starting number. It is 32-080XX. Is this just an error on the Ruger database or was mine made in 1973? I always want to know as much as possible about the history of my firearms as possible. Is this weird? Any help would be great. Location: Kentucky | Ruger's data pages are quite often 'off'. The Red eagle News Exchange Reference shows first-year New Model .357 Blackhawks starting at serial number 32-00001 and running thru 32-33638. Serial number 32-33639 is the beginning number for 1974 production. Ruger's list has slipped a year, skipping 1973. |

Location: Redmond, OR | In the Book, 'Ruger and His Guns' by R.L. Wilson the 1973 .357 Blackhawks start with 31-41511. It still doesn't answer the Old/New question. Great looking revolver, by the way! |

Ed Mann Location: lovely downtown Central Florida | This thing isn't too hard to figure out if you consider this cut & paste job: Ruger made their last .357 OMBH in mid-1973 with a serial number somewhere over 31-41550 and less than or equal to 31-99999. Ruger made their first .357 NMBH in mid-1973 and, probably, didn't use up all of the 31-XXXXX serial numbers, but decided to start a new serial number series, starting with 32-00001. Have no idea when during 1973 the changeover occurred, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that there may have been some overlap in production. |

Location: NW Chicago Suburbs | Your replies all makes sense to me. I just thought they made the New Model starting in 1974 but my serial number looks like a 1973 one. Perhaps they started making the NM in 1973 and mine is one of the early bunch. |

Location: Kentucky | The last 'three-screw' Old Model .357 shipped was 31-45190 in May of 1973. The New Models started shipping shortly thereafter. The last Old Model made was 31-45191, but it was scrapped at the factory. There were no more 31-prefix .357's made. The 32-prefix was assigned to the New Models. |

Make: Sturm, Ruger & Co.
Model: Old Model Three-Screw Super Blackhawk
Serial Number: 11471
Year of Manufacture: 1963
Caliber: .44 Magnum & Special Cartridges
Action Type: 6-Shot, Single Action, Side Gate Loaded Un-Fluted Cylinder Revolver with Recessed Chambers
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked 'STURM, RUGER & CO. / SOUTHPORT, CONN. U.S.A.' with the company logo. The left of the frame is marked 'RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK / .44 MAGNUM CAL.', the right is marked with the serial number. The front of the cylinder is marked with an 'S'.
Barrel Length: 7 ½ inches.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade set on a riser fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a flat top square notched blade pinned to the top strap, adjustable for elevation and windage.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth walnut with black on silver colored Ruger logo medallions. The stocks have a few scattered shallow scrape and scratch marks, the escutcheon hole on the left panel has some very small splinter losses. The right panel has a tiny chip along the backstrap. There are no cracks in the grips. The panels have darkened from age. The grips are in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep and sharp. There is no erosion. As with all used firearms, cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish is in a light turn ring, a hint of wear on the left and right sides of the barrel at the muzzle, a scratch on the left side of the grip frame above and behind the trigger, three light marks on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder, a thin scratch on the right side of the frame which begins just below the forward screw and continues down onto the right side of the grip frame, a spot of wear on the front edge of the ejector-rod housing, thinning of finish at most edges and loss of finish on the middle screw-head. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, with very light play evident in the cylinder lockup. The transfer bar was NOT added. We did not fire this handgun. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: How many firearms manufacturers have their own sections in reloading manuals? Well, Ruger does in large part due to their Blackhawk and Super-Blackhawk revolvers. Introduced in 1959, the Super-Blackhawk has one of the strongest frames every built for a pistol-caliber revolver. This, combined with the .44 Magnum cartridge, a 7 1/2' barrel, and a 9 5/8' sight radius makes for a revolver that will make any recoil junky smile, can hunt just about any animal in the United States, or just put holes in paper very close together. This example, produced before the 4-line warning on the barrel, before the removal of the half-cock from the design, and not sent back under recall for the installation of a transfer-bar also has collector value. Whether you intend this revolver for collecting, hunting, or target shooting, this Super-Blackhawk will get the job done. Please see our photos and good luck!
