Early Part Variations: Research & Development prior to Mass Production. The Winchester prototype adopted by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department on 30 Sep 1941 as the new 'Carbine, Caliber.30, M1' was a design concept built using parts and experience gained from manufacturing a variety of other firearms. I did a search with the serial number and it does seem that it was made by Winchester. Here is a link to a pretty good site about M1 Carbine with a good bit of information. He goes on to say that 3,542 completed carbines were at the factory when taken over by Saginaw, Grand Rapids on Jan. 11, 1944 (observed serial numbers for these carbines are below 1,750,000). All other carbines, approximately 50,000 in number, were produced by Saginaw with IP receivers.

I recently purchased an M1 Carbine that has two different numbers stamped on the receiver.

Inland M1 Carbine Serial Dates

It is an IBM receiver with IBM CORP and serial number 3835XXX behind the rear sight. In front of the rear sight is the number 5835XXX where the XXX are the same numbers.

Each serial number starts with a two letter prefix. The prefix was used to indicate a variety of things about the particular series shown with each chart below. The Model T4/M2. The original request for submissions in 1940 for what would eventually become the M1 Carbine called for a carbine capable of semi.

Us M1 Carbine Serial Numbers

The receiver is an Auto Ordanance sub-contractor receiver with AO stamped on the rear slope.

The numbers are stamped in different fonts with the rear being a narrow font with angle shaped 3s while the front has a rounded 3.

If it makes any difference barrel is marked IBM CORP 10-43 with flaming bomb stamp. The stock is a rockola low wood I cut stock marked RMC.

And it is an Underwood rebuild with type 3 barrel band, flip safety, and milled adjustable sight.

I can find no import marks anywhere on the rifle.

I was not able to find any discussion of this after extensive web searches. Any help that can be provided in helping me understand what this means or indicates would be appreciated.
