Action Type: Single or Double Action Semi-Auto Pistol with 15 Round Detachable Magazines. The gun does not have an external safety to safely carry in Single Action.
Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “SIG SAUER P229 STAINLESS / SIGARMS INC. / EXETER - NH - USA”. The right side of the frame is marked “SIGARMS INC. / EXETER – NH - / FRAME MADE IN GERMANY ”, and “AG23533”. The right side of the barrel at the port is marked “.357 SIG”.
Barrel Length: 3 ¾”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a steel blade dovetailed into the top of the slide. The left side is marked “8”. The rear sight is a square notch dovetailed into the slide. There is a white line in the center of the notch and a white dot in the rear face of the front blade.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two pieces textured black plastic that encloses the backstrap. The grips are marked “SIG SAUER” near the bottoms of the grips. The texturing is sharp with a few light marks on all three sides. The grip rates in about Fine to Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: The pistol has a dull black Nitron finish on the slide and a matte black finish on the alloy frame. The front strap is serrated.
Finish Originality: The finish is original.
Bore Condition: Both barrels are bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. There is a considerable amount of wear from use to the exterior of the .40 S&W barrel.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There is some loss on the leading edge of the magazine well. There are a few other light places of finish loss on the slide rails and barrel from normal moderate use. There are a few tiny nicks of finish loss at the trigger guard and decocker. Again, this is all from moderate use and handling, no sign of abuse. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This pistol has a de-cocker on the left side of the frame and was not built with a magazine disconnect. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a total of two 10 round magazine, paperwork, lock, and hard case that numbers to the gun. The left side of the magazine is marked “SIG SAUER / .40.357”. The right side of the magazines is marked “MADE IN / GERMANY”. The magazine shows minimal wear and is in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: The P229 is a compact variant of the larger P226, itself a double stack magazine variant of the P220. Because of its compact size, relatively lightweight and large magazine capacity, the P229 is a favorite for duty and concealed carry purposes. This pistol sports a stainless steel slide with a matte black finish and a matte black alloy frame. This pistol is especially nice with the additional barrel. In case you run out or can’t find any .357 SIG you can always drop the .40 S&W barrel in the gun in a matter of seconds and be back at it. The gun has seen some range use, likely just practice for the day we wish never comes.

I was unable to find any of the markings mentioned on my P229. There are no marking on the underside of the slide. I changed the grips out to Hogue wrap-around rubberized grips, and can't at the moment find the originals. Found the owners manual..would've thought they'd be right there with it..
Anyway, as best as I researched quickly, the P229 sold in the US was not assembled in Germany. So I guess the letter codes do not apply? The only mark other than the serial # on the barrel I found was a small 'P' (no circle) on the side of the protrusion that the guide rod and recoil spring rest. I did check the mags the pistol shipped with and they were stamped '94. Was that the first year the P229 was out or was it released in '93?
EDIT: based on the link on the sigforum (http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/430601935/m/467100822) it appears the two letters that start the serial number do, in fact, indicate the year..or at least closely correspond. The pattern is lost by 'AM.' My serial number starts 'AD' which appears to be standard for the 1994 year. Going back means AC is '93, AB is '92 so AA would be '91 (just as .40 cal came out). the P229 wasn't released until 1992 and only in .40 cal.

But I'm pretty sure you'd rather just look at the sticker on the end of the hard case it came in.
