Bushmaster Serial Number Date
December 21st, 2013, 05:57 AM | #1 |
Old Salt Location: Western Virginia | One of my coworkers brought me a BCR to inspect. Her stepson was going to give it to her husband and she ponied up some cash for upgrades. Stepson did not want the dept armorers to look at it. When we got it we noticed the front gas block was canted. then there was no pin holding the gas tube to the front sight block. After aligning the gas tube, it was way off in the upper. We took off the barrel and the indent in the upper where the barrel pin inserts, was damaged allowing the barrel indexing key to move to the left (that's way the gas block was canted. We realigned everything and according to Bushy's instructions, applied loc tite before reinstalling the barrel. Everything lined up. Took it to the range. We could not get more than 2 shots without the bolt not going into battery. It would chamber a round and the bolt would stop when just touching the barrel lugs. The round would insert into the chamber (coming out of the extractor). We could use the forward assist to insert the bolt or remove the mag and use the charging handle to reengage the bolt. I assumed the barrel/upper were torqueing during fire and the lugs were not aligning (they would not align when the gas block was canted although it would force into battery). I too it back to the armory and looked at the bolt/carrier. There were indentations where the gas tube was striking the key. Looking at the gas tube, it was correctly aligned in the upper. Again, our opinion was the upper and barrel were twisting during operation and it was causing misalignment. The rifle is going under the Christmas tree. Upon opening he will be advised/lectured/ordered NOT to shoot it. We will help him sell the usable parts and get another, quality rifle. This is the first time I have worked on a carbon rifle. I was very under-impressed. |
Join Date: Nov 2001. Just picked up a Bushmaster. Unless I am reading this wrong,if a Bushmaster serial number is below L051000,it is either a pre-ban rifle,or a pre 1994 lower. Geektool download. The AR I just got home with is L0406XX,that makes it a pre-ban correct? The model is XM15-E2s. Pre-Ban Bushmaster M17S Serial Numbers Does anyone know the range of pre-ban Bushmaster M17S serial numbers? I'm lookng at one that looks to be pre-ban but want to make sure.

Bushmaster Serial Number Designation
This information is not an official statement by any government agency, manufacturer, or any other entity. Data presented here is correct to the best of the webmaster’s knowledge. No warranty or guarantee of any kind is made concerning the accuracy of the following information.
18 U.S.C. sec. 921 (a) (30) (B). Traditionally, the frame or receiver of a firearm has been legally equivalent to the firearm itself. 18 U.S.C. sec. 921 (a) (3). This has led some people to believe that a pre-ban receiver, that is, one manufactured before 9/13/94, is the same as a pre-ban 'assault weapon.' Unfortunately, this is not correct.
Simply because lower receiver has a 'pre-ban' serial number does not necessarily mean that the firearm was assembled prior to the ban, only that the receiver was manufactured before the effective date of the ban. In order for an assault weapon to be 'grandfathered', it must have been configured as an assault weapon prior to the ban (the effective date of the ban was September 13, 1994.)
Possession of a post-ban firearm in an 'assault weapon' configuration is a felony unless it is possessed in accordance with one of the Federal exceptions.
If a stripped lower receiver was in a dealer's bound book at the time the ban took effect, and it is later discovered in an assault weapon configuration, it could be rather easily ascertained that it is not a grandfathered firearm. Receivers in private hands on the day of the ban are a little more ambiguous as who is to say if it was or was not in an assault weapon configuration on the date of the ban, and then later stripped? As always, buyer beware.
Relax, we had to use the term 'assault weapon' because that’s the name these types of firearms were given by the folks who wrote the laws.
According to the law, a rifle is an 'assault weapon' if it has a detachable magazine, and two or more of the following:
A folding or telescoping stock.
A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action.
A bayonet mount.
A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor.
A grenade launcher.
